This past week I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with fellow wedding vendor, and dare I say new friend Jen Vanderzalm, owner of Dames & Dolls Make up & Hair. We chatted all things wedding artistry, and I’m here to share all the deets!
If you’re in the process of wedding planning, and you haven’t booked a beauty team yet, then keep reading! We’re here to give you all the tips on navigating hiring a hair and make up artist, how to prep, how NOT to prep and all the fun things in between.
Jen has been in the industry for just over 7 years, and she is an absolute pro. Not only is she prepared for anything, she’s professional, and personable. Just genuinely fun to be around, someone you would love to have around you on your wedding day.
We started with a few tips on how to hire a beauty team, and of course the number one tip was do you research! Much like most vendors, doing your research is key. Really looking into your vendors history, social media, and reviews will help determine if they’re right for you or not.
Secondly, but equally important is cleanliness. These vendors are all up in your business, and you want them to be clean and sanitary. Jen spends most of the day prior to your wedding day, cleaning brushes, prepping all her make up to make sure it’s clean and ready to be applied on your face and hair. If you ever wonder why make up artists can be more expensive for bridal, then this right here answers that question. You need so many more brushes and tools to get bridal make up done in a timely fashion. Timing is everything on wedding day.
Thirdly, make sure the make up artist you choose produces the look you’re going or. Back to doing research, pick someone who is most known for the look you want. You wont want to hire someone who loves doing glam looks, when you want something more natural, and vice versa.
Once you’ve hired your team, make sure your communicating your vision, your goals, and all the things you expect on your day. You’re team can only do with the information you give them, so make sure you share the crap out of that #pinterest vision board, and come up with a plan of action.
Prepping for your day! DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT get super drunk, and binge eat chips the night before! Hello massive under eye bags. You’re make up artist can work miracles, but they cannot take that drunken night off your face. Make sure you have plenty of sleep, drink lots of water, and save the drinking for the night of your wedding!
Jen talks about putting together a touch up kit together for you to keep your face looking fantastic all day long. This is so great for touching up all those kissed lips, or tearing cheeks!
While I could go on about all the things we chatted about, go watch the video, because we talk so much more! Plus some shenanigans and of course a dog.
